Recovering in the Catskills

Hurricane Irene dealt this part of the world an unexpected and deft blow. Our creeks and streams already swollen from a rainy August became raging and powerful rivers after 27 hours of unrelenting rain. The villages in the valleys were passable by boat only for hours after the storm passed through. The amount of damage and devastation was incomprehensible. In our village of Fleischmanns, ten houses were swept away, a woman died and countless homes and properties were severely damaged. Most of our roads and bridges are repaired and life goes on. The spirit here is indomitable!

Breezy Hill Inn is situated on the side of a mountain and out of the path of the rivers. We are thankful and feel sorrow for those who were adversely affected.

Autumn is in the air; nights are cool and the days are still warm. The leaves have started to change colors although many are dried and brown, a result of the early drought of the spring and summer. We expect the mountains to be aglow with oranges and reds and ideal leaf peeping is only a few weeks away.
