Light dusting of Snow This Morning!

T'is the day before Christmas and all are scurrying and preparing for the big day! At Breezy Hill Inn, we are baking muffins and more! We have a big week ahead with Belleayre skiers coming up on the 26th. The forecast calls for snow Sunday night. The temperatures are cold enough for blowing snow and this morning the report from Belleayre has Superchief open in addition to chair 1 and the Triple. The slopes are calling!

First Ski and Board Day at Belleayre

It's a spectacular morning!

The sky is bright blue with some clouds this morning. As you see from the picture, snow is on the ground. Up at the mountain, they have been busy blowing snow to add to nature's bountiful snowfall this past Thursday. Our guests at the Inn this weekend are on their way to the mountain for their first run of the season. They had a great breakfast featuring Georgette's fine herb omelette. Join us at Breezy Hill Inn this season and ski or board at half price.

Recovering in the Catskills

Hurricane Irene dealt this part of the world an unexpected and deft blow. Our creeks and streams already swollen from a rainy August became raging and powerful rivers after 27 hours of unrelenting rain. The villages in the valleys were passable by boat only for hours after the storm passed through. The amount of damage and devastation was incomprehensible. In our village of Fleischmanns, ten houses were swept away, a woman died and countless homes and properties were severely damaged. Most of our roads and bridges are repaired and life goes on. The spirit here is indomitable!

Breezy Hill Inn is situated on the side of a mountain and out of the path of the rivers. We are thankful and feel sorrow for those who were adversely affected.

Autumn is in the air; nights are cool and the days are still warm. The leaves have started to change colors although many are dried and brown, a result of the early drought of the spring and summer. We expect the mountains to be aglow with oranges and reds and ideal leaf peeping is only a few weeks away.

Support our recovery by visiting our area!

Guests at the Inn

This weekend we have guests at the Inn who are returning to the home of some of their childhood memories. One guest spent her summers here in Fleischmanns as a young girl. In fact, she stayed with her family in this house many summers in a row. She and her husband are staying in the blue room which was the room she slept in as a child.

Two other guests are former campers at Limberlake Camp in Shandaken and are reliving their camper years attending activities at the camp in celebration of the camp's 50th anniversary. they are delighted to see familiar faces ad full of stories from their camper years.

So what is it about the Catkills that draws people back? Great memories of care free days, the beauty of the mountains or its fresh air or nostalgia for another time in their lives. All of the foregoing! The Catskills is not just steeped in the past. Today we have farmers markets with abundant produce, galleries filled with fabulous art and crafts, music festivals with top performers and hiking, birdwatching, canoeing and kayakings, fishing etc.

A weekend in the Catsklls will refresh you and make you feel better about the world!

Rainbow over Breezy Hill Inn

The weather has been magnificent the last couple of days. Yesterday late in the afternoon there was a sun shower after which the most spectacular rainbow appeared. The colors were so vibrant and it spanned a full 180 degrees making a perfect arc. As if that specter of nature was not enough, a second one appeared just above it. Come to the Catskills and be awed by the beauty of nature in our mountains.

Peonies in Bloom

Dear Friends,

Despite  the torrential  rain this afternoon, the peonies blooms are fragrant and magnificent. I cut one of every type in the garden and have arranged a lush bouquet for the dinning room table to enhance tomorrow's breakfast. See the picture below!.

Guests staying with us this weekend are attending a wedding at Stone Tavern in Roxbury which is just 15 minutes over the mountains. It is expected to be a beautiful day with temperatures in the 70's. Perfect for hiking, walking or attending an outdoor weddings. This is my favorite time of the year. I love to wake up to the birds chirping away. The grass will  be covered by dew but by mid morning the flowers will reach for the sun and the color in the gardens will be spectacular.

Come join us at Breezy Hill Inn this summer. You'll feel restored by the beauty of the mountains, the fresh air and all that nature has to offer!

Winds so High , Belleayre Closed for the Afternoon!

President's Weekend is a big holiday for this region! We have been booked for weeks; imagine our surprise yesterday when the winds were so fierce that Belleayre closed before noon. We've been up here for over 28 years and I cannot ever remember the Belleayre Ski Center closing. Happily, the weather is much improved this morning. There are two inches of fresh powder on the slope, the sun is shining and all is well.

Our guests, all 16 of them feasted on apple and blueberry crepes this morning. Of course, the coffee was flowing and they all loved the homemade pumpkin bread. New guests arrive this afternoon for a couple of days and then more coming after that. Let's hope the winds don't whip up again!

Green Tomato Jam!

It's a magnificent January morning in the Catskills! We have had over 21 inches of snow in the last three days and the sun is glistening on the fresh fallen snow. Today we served breakfast to 12 people, 7 adults and 5 children. They all came down bright and early. The tomato jam was the center of conversation except for skiing anecdotes. Our neighbor and friends made tomato jam this summer and gave us a couple of jars. Everyone loves it especially on the white chocolate bread that our local farmer makes. The omelets with home grown chives and cheddar cheese were served following fresh pineapple. We sent everyone to the slopes for a glorious day of skiing!
